This is a true story of a British soldier who was in the Royal Artillery, Royal Garrison Artillery and the Royal Artillery Regiment in the British Army during the Second World War.
He enlisted in the British Army in 1938 and is a prisoner of war is the infamous Changi Prison camp in Singapore in 1942. The Japanese were delighted to have such skilled prisoners to help them to build a railway and erect more and more buildings in the Japanese style around their new prisoner of war camp.
He survived the dangers of the Japanese and the awful conditions of the Changi P.O.W. camp and the railway.
His story of survival in the Changi P.O.W. camp and the “Death Railway” in Burma is quite amazing and as it is told here, it is a real eye opener.
The way he got himself to Changi and the things he saw and heard during his three years in Changi, are quite amazing.
He talks about the terrible conditions on the “Death Railway” and the terrible conditions on Changi.
He speaks about the work of the Japanese, work the POWs had to do in Changi in the Japanese style which included compulsory labor and the treatment of the Japanese soldiers by the POWs.
His diary of the time he spent in Changi Prison is quite revealing and makes you think about how you would react in the same or similar situation.
When he finally managed to escape from Changi he went through many difficulties to get away, then when he got to Malaya and Burma he joined the guerrillas and was involved in many battles and many exciting times.
When the war was finally won he returned to the United Kingdom. He talks about the Battle of Singapore and the fall of Singapore in 1942.
He speaks about his future life when he returned home and tells us of his family life and life as a Royal Artillery Gunner in the British Army during the war years.
He also tells us about his experiences during his time as a prisoner of war in Changi, and of the railway journey to Burma where he worked on the “Death Railway”.
What Inspired the Price of Freedom?
This is a true story that happened during the Second World War and the fact that I am a First World War Veteran prompted me to do this and because I wanted to tell this story of a true war story.

The year is 1942, England is at war with Germany and Japan, Britain and Japan are allies.
The main character is called Richardson, Jack Richardson, Richardson, Richardson, Richardson has a British Royal Artillery number 62350 which he is working at the artillery HQ in Singapore. He is a soldier, an artist, an art lover and an excellent pianist.

Plot summary
Chapter 1
Jack goes out one day on an errand for the commander of the artillery. He is riding a horse when he is attacked by a Japanese soldier who pushes him off his horse and ties it up. He then leaves his gun and follows the man.
Jack’s height and body weight are 5’9″ and 125 pounds and he is fair skinned. He doesn’t understand what the man wants him to do but the Japanese soldier tells him to follow him.
The Japanese soldier eventually makes him climb over a wall into a rice field. He is helped up and then made to run towards a hill where there is a house.
Jack follows the soldier and is surprised to see a group of people standing on the front lawn, but he is told to run to the front door and knock. Jack is taken by surprise and he is knocked to the ground by an old woman.
He is knocked out for a short while and he hears the woman screaming at the Japanese soldiers.
The Japanese soldier goes over to the woman, the soldiers threaten the woman and he then takes Jack and throws him on the back of his motorcycle. He takes him to a prison in Singapore.
Chapter 2
Jack wakes up in a bamboo cage in a prison in Singapore. He hears people talking in Japanese. He tries to talk but he cannot speak Japanese.
The day comes when he is brought outside and his hands are tied.

Notes on the Diary:
Here is some notes from the diary written by a member of the British Royal Artillery who was held prisoner by the Japanese in the infamous Changi P.O.W. camp, taken from his diary dated 10th July 1941:
” On the 9th July, 1941 I was taken with the other POWs to the Burma Death Railway.
At Camp 10 I was handed over to Sergeant Munn who was in charge of the camp. He took me up the railway and I saw the wrecks. They were great big bunkers one on top of another made of timber with a cap on it. I was told later they were made of bricks and cement. They were bombed by the RAF in 1942.
There was a heavy fog on the way to the railway and I could not see the camp properly. There was a British Cemetery on the railway but we did not go there.
The next day a British officer took us to the railway where we were shown the position of the guns and gun positions.
When we got back to the camp I saw all my pals being marched away by the Japs. Some were going to be sent back to England and others had been taken to Singapore. I do not know where they were going.
That evening I heard the bombing from the gun and shell positions in the early hours of the morning and the AA guns got active.
At 8 o’clock I was sent up the railway to the former gun position with the Japs. I was told to find where the wireless was. When I got to the gun position I found that a soldier who had been there before us was taking shelter in a bunker. I went in and found that it was a small room with a table and about four chairs. The room was full of men. A part of the roof had been blown off and the air was very hot.
A sailor came up and shouted that the wireless had been found. He had it in his hands.
About 12 o’clock I got back to the camp and told them that the wireless was found.
That evening I got the chance of seeing a concert which was given in a hall at the other end of the camp. There were quite a number of Japanese soldiers present.
On the 12th July, I was taken up the railway again
